On the other, I definitely don't do enough. On one hand Jo's work is already flawed and limited and nothing can be done about that. (I recommend "the lost generation" by JennBob if you want to read a much more realistic depiction of the rise of right-wing fascism in the Harry Potter universe.) While I make some efforts to be more critical of Jo's short comings, it is by no means a fix.
Her world is founded on British imperialism and though she highlights issues of class and some aspects of racism it is hardly nuanced. Harry Potter has changed a lot in the 6 years that I've been working on this fic, and before you start reading I want to make a few things clear:ġ - trans women are women, and trans men are men I've included at least 1 trans character in this work and the fact that I did that shouldn't have to be a statement about anything because trans and nonbinary folks exist and they shouldn't have to feel like their story is statement on anything.Ģ - Jo's world has been an incredible playspace, although limited in terms of whose stories she has told. I'm so happy so many people have enjoyed what I've written. I never honestly expected it to get this far, and I can't believe it's still going strong. This all began because I wanted to reread Harry Potter, but I couldn't do it without imagining the "what if" and how different it might be with James and Lily being present for it all.
